UK Driving Licence Categories:

Driver & Vehicle License Authority issues different type of driving licences depending on the class of vehicle. DVLA issues driving licence mainly in the following categories:

  • Mopeds.
  • Motor Cycles.
  • Light Vehicles & Quad Bikes.
  • Cars.
  • Medium size Vehicles.
  • Large Vehicles.
  • Mini Buses.

  • Other Categories.

Mopeds:

Moped Licences are of three categories, they are Category AM Moped Licence, Category P Moped Licence, and Category Q Moped Licence,

  • Category AM Moped Licence – you can drive 2 or 3 wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of 25 KPH.
  • Category P Moped Licence – You can drive 2 wheeled vehicles with a maximum design speed of 45 KPH.
  • Category Q Moped Licence – you can drive 2 wheeled vehicles with an engine size more than 50 cc.

Motorcycles:

Motorcycle licences are again classified into 3 types they are Category A Motorcycle Licence, Category A1 Motorcycle Licence, and Category A2 Motorcycle Licence.

  • Category A Motorcycle Licence: You can drive a motorcycle with a power output of 35KW.
  • Category A1 Motorcycle Licence: You can drive light motorbikes of engine size 125cc.
  • Category A2 – Motorcycle Licence: You can drive a motorcycle with a power output of 35KW.

Light Vehicles & Quad Bikes:

DVLA issues Category B1 Light vehicle licence for this type of vehicles.

Category B1 Light vehicle licence: you can drive 4 wheeled motor vehicles up to 400kg.

Cars:

There are different categories in car licences they are:

Category B Car Licence:

You can drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8250 KG mass if you have passed the test before first January 1997.

Category B Car Licence:

You can drive a vehicle and trailer combination up to 8250 KG mass with up to 8 passengers on it if you have passed the test before after January 1997.

Category B Auto car licence:

You can drive the same vehicles of Category B but the vehicle should have automatic transmission.

Medium Sized Vehicles:

Medium sized vehicle licences are of 2 types they are:

Category C1 Licence: You can drive the vehicles mass ranging from 3500 to 7500 kg.

Category C1E Licence: You can drive C1 category vehicles + a trailer but the weight should not exceed 12,000 kg.

Large Vehicles:

Large vehicle licences are classified in to 2 types they are Category C large vehicle licence & Category CE large vehicle licence.

Category C large vehicle licence:

You can drive the large vehicles whose mass is exceeding 3500 kg.

Category CE large vehicle licence:

You can drive all the large vehicles fall under category C plus a trailer whose mass should not exceed 750 kg.

Mini Buses:

Mini Bus Licences are classified in to 2 types they are Category D mini bus licence and Category D1E mini bus licence.

Category D mini bus licence:

You can drive a mini bus of 16 passengers with Category D mini bus licence.

Category D1E mini bus licence:

You can drive all the mini buses come under category D plus a mini bus with a trailer over 750 kg.

 Buses:

Bus Licences are classified in to 2 types they are Category D bus licence and Category D1E bus licence.

Category D bus licence:

You can drive any bus but with more than 8 passengers with Category D bus licence.

Category D1E bus licence:

You can drive all the buses come under category D plus a bus with a trailer over 750 kg.

Other Categories:

There are 7 different licences which are issued under the other categories they are:

  • Category f Driving Licence – you can drive an agriculture tractor with category f licence.
  • Category G Driving Licence – you can drive a road roller with category G licence.
  • Category H Driving Licence – you can drive tracked vehicles with category H licence.
  • Category k Driving Licence – you can drive a Mowing Machine with category k licence.
  • Category l Driving Licence – you can drive electrically propelled vehicle with category l licence.
  • Category M Driving Licence – you can drive trolley vehicles with category M licence.
  • Category n Driving Licence – you can drive a vehicle which is exempt from duty with category n licence.
